On-Site personal 2-way radio is the biggest single application for privately owned personal 2-way radios, closely following the use of such devices by public safety users. Unfortunately, there are problems. There is no open standard that allows true interoperability. Traditional 2-way radios operate in different bands and different operating platforms. Most, with the exception of LTE and TETRA are designed primarily for voice communications with VERY limited data capability. The cost is considerably higher than cell phones, even "smart" phones; and there is the issue of licensing. The good news is that there is now an alternative - the WiFi radio by ICOM! The IP100H can serve as an alternative for conventional license-free radios, such as FRS, ISM 900 MHz and MURS. While conventional radios generally do a fine job, the bands they operate in are overcrowded or systems limited. With only 14 FRS channels and 5 MURS channels, interference is inevitable. Adding CTCSS or DCS will offer some relief, but can only do so much. While interference is not so much of an issue with ISM radios, there are no system integration capabilities (i.e. no way to extend range, integrate with networks, etc.).

BTW, we are familiar with the PTT WiFi apps for Smartphones and some of the consumer products available from China. Save your money. The Smartphone PTT apps are strictly for geeks and the consumer radios are not designed for commercial or mission critical use. Conversely, the IP100H is rugged and reliable with battery life to spare, along with PC integration and full duplex telephone operation with optional headset!
